My research is focused on understanding how close relationships are associated with child, adolescent, and young adult development. I am particularly interested in studying how parent-child, sibling, peer, and romantic partner relationships impact and are impacted by the development of substance use problems and related externalizing and internalizing psychopathology during adolescence and the transition into young adulthood. Biopsychosocial and developmental psychopathology frameworks guide my work in understanding how aspects of the individual work together with aspects of social context to influence the onset of substance use problems, depression, and antisocial behavior and continuation vs. discontinuation of these problems over time.

  • Adolescent to early adult development
  • Alcohol and substance use
  • Externalizing behavior and disorders
  • Gene- and person-environment Interplay
  • Personality and individual differences
  • Risk and protective factors
