My research focuses on how public policies including social welfare policies, health policies, and criminal justice policy influence people’s political behaviors and attitudes. I am interested in understanding how people’s lived experiences with government policies contributes to political and social inequality over time.
n one chapter, I explore how growing up on welfare influences an individual’s party identification in young adulthood. My second empirical chapter investigates the effects of people’s cumulative experiences with welfare programs and the criminal justice system on their political participation and political interest over time across elections. Additionally, I am interested in exploring whether and how the relationship between adolescent policy experiences and political outcomes in adulthood varies by race, gender, and where an adolescent grows up.
I study public policy, political behavior, and poverty in the United States. I focus on social policy, health policy, and criminal justice policy. My primary research agenda examines how public policies shape people's political orientations such as party identification and political behaviors like political participation. This process is called policy feedback.
With a focus on adolescence, I am studying how experiences with government policy programs during one's youth shapes political orientations in adulthood.
In my second chapter, I explore how cumulative policy experiences affect an individual's propensity to vote and political interest over time across elections.
