Catherine Davies uses qualitative discourse analytic techniques to examine cross-(sub)cultural interaction, Southern discourse (including narrative and country music), and the complexity of humor as a communicative phenomenon. 

Catherine Davies has explored second language learning inside and outside of classrooms; she is particularly interested in the application of interactional sociolinguistics to second language pedagogy.
