Dr. Wilkerson's research focuses on the utilization of health behavior theoretical models to provide a deeper understanding of the factors influencing health behavior change in order to conceptualize preventative behavioral approaches to guide effective health promotion interventions. In her current work, she incorporates an ecological framework to investigate influences on sedentary behavior among adults in the workplace setting. She is interested in exploring factors that contribute to sedentary lifestyles and developing strategies to reduce sedentary behavior and  increase physical activity among adults. She has also conducted research exploring other areas in health promotion including skin cancer prevention, substance use, and college student health.
