Dr. van Benthem is interested in developing a fundamental mechanistic understanding of structure-property relationships and related phenomena in functional nanomaterials, focusing on defect structure evolution under externally-applied stress fields.

Klaus van Benthem is interested in the evolution of materials defects under externally applied stimuli such as high temperatures, electric fields and currents, and oxidizing or reducing environments. His research projects focus on the evolution of ceramic microstructures, including grain growth, grain boundary transformations, wetting-dewetting transitions at metal/ceramic interfaces, and reliability physics of multilayer semiconductor device structures.

Klaus van Benthem is interested in the investigation of the functionalities of novel nano-materials.

  • Microstructure evolution in ceramics, wetting and dewetting behavior of metal thin films, field assisted sintering, aberration-corrected electron microscopy

Our research interests are in the atomic-resolution investigation of functional nano-materials and their defects.

Research Interest:

  • Materials under extreme conditions; determination of Structure-property relationships in functional nanomaterials through atomic-scale investigation of defect structure evolution under applied external stress; equilibrium conditions of heterophase interfaces and grain boundaries.
