Research Interests:

  • Phonetic and sociophonetic variation in American English varieties, particularly vocalic and intonational variation
  • Speech perception and speech processing
  • How individual-level social attributes impact grammatical and phonetic variation
  • Grammatical variation in Southern American Englishes and Appalachian Englishes

His research focuses on the sociophonetic variation and change in the English varieties of the American South, particularly of the Appalachian region. His research analyzes the impact of local identity on a variety of phonological features.

My research and teaching interests include phonetics and sociophonetics, sociolinguistics, speech perception and language processing, and other aspects of Southern and Appalachian Englishes. In particular, my current research agenda focuses on how individual-level social attributes are expressed phonetically, centering on vocalic and prosodic variation.

My research has two main foci: language variation and change, particularly in the varieties of English in the Southern United States, and the perception of phonetic processes.

Other areas of interest are statistical analysis, particularly mixed effects models and other hierarchical linear models.
