Her research areas are grounded in race and ethnicity, criminology, media, and Black motherhood. Mahalia’s research specifically focuses on Black mothers who have lost children to gun violence, survivorship and victimization of Black men and women, media portrayals of Black men and women, and police and state sanctioned violence.
