Saint Vincent College will conduct a three week residential Young Scholars program for 32 students entering the 9th or 10th grades. Participants work on small group research projects in environmental chemistry,computer graphics, comparative economic systems and atmospheric physics. Career explorations, field trips and an "Ethics in Science Forum" will address or reinforce issues related to the projects disciplinary areas. Follow up activities include year round continuation of summer research projects and a one day symposium.University of Alabama will initiate a 4-week, residential Young Scholars project for 24 young women entering grades eight and nine. The disciplinary focus is in statistics and probability with small group interactions emphasizing written and verbal communications utilized to explore and build skills. Monthly follow-up occurs throughout the academic year with women scientists as mentors. Parents, teachers and counselors are involved to support and extend the project's benefits.
