Research and Teaching Interests: Gender, Globalization, Social Movements, Migration, Post-Socialism

Her research is in the field of sociology of gender, particularly gender inequality, gender-based violence, and feminist movements. Dr. Shapkina conducts research on sex trafficking of women and anti-trafficking organizations. She teaches courses on sociological theory, sociology of gender, sexuality, racial relations, human trafficking, and post-communist societies.

Dr. Shapkina’s research interests are related to the studies of gender, migration, and globalization. She studies how contemporary social problems increasingly transcend national boundaries and how governments, international organizations, and social movements initiate, coordinate, and negotiate their responses to these global social problems. Currently, she examines the problem of sex trafficking of women from the former Soviet countries and analyzes anti-trafficking campaigns in the post-Soviet region and transnationally.
