Reviewed and administered allocation of the district's State and Federal grant monies ($11 million) for thirteen schools and eight instructional programs. Programs included: Bilingual Education, Eisenhower Professional Development, Goals 2000-Community School, Migrant Education, Safe andDrug-Free Schools, Special Education, Technology Literacy Challenge Grant, and Violence Prevention. Advised on programming decisions and monitored compliance issues. Provided consultative support in the development and completion of each building's annual School Improvement Plan, and effective use of Compensatory Education funds. Assisted in districtwide grant writing, grant review, and budget preparation. Served on the following committees: Professional Development Committee; Board of Education's Diversity and Multicultural Education Advisory Committee; Health and Safe & Drug-Free Advisory Panel; LATTICE (Linking All Types of Teachers to International Cross Cultural Education).
3/94 - 2/97 Community Development Specialist, Programs for Linguistic and Cultural Diversity, Lansing School District. Functioned in a supervisory capacity for projects at the Center for Language, Culture and Communication Arts (CLCCA) and the Programs for Linguistic and Cultural Diversity. Chaired the Annual Cultural Diversity Symposium from 1994-1997, co-sponsored by the Lansing School District and the City of Lansing. Responsibilities included convening planning meetings, drafting the budget, scheduling facilities and presentations, trouble-shooting, and coordinating the activities of all planning committee members. Developed and implemented budgetary and staffing decisions; directed the 1996 CLCCA Title I Extended School Year Program; coordinated activities at the CLCCA which involved parents, community members, Lansing Community College, and Michigan Student University students; compiled and edited a parent handbook entitled 'Cultural Anthology' and a collection of student writings entitled 'A Story to Tell,' which were published by the district.
11/93 - 1/94 Development Consultant, Inter-Aid International, Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Contracted by U.S.-based donor organization, InterAid International, to conduct an appraisal of a non-profit development agency operating in Honduras. Purpose of appraisal was to evaluate the agency's performance and determine the feasibility of continued financial support. Final report served as the primary reference for deciding future funding for the Honduran agency.
6/93 - 9/93 Project Supervisor, Visions International, Inc., Tortola, British Virgin Islands. Implemented a community service/youth development program with a budget of $40,000. Supervised and coordinated the work of 25 U.S. teenagers toward the refurbishment of sub-standard housing in accordance with the B.V.I. government's social development program. Organized youths' participation as aides in the Tortolan public and private Elementary Schools. Instructed and counseled youths in cross-cultural awareness and community development.
10/91 - 9/92 Peace Corps Coordinator, Center for International Studies, Ohio University. Responsible for overall management of recruitment activities in community and on campus. Developed liaison relationships between Ohio University faculty and the Regional Office in Detroit. Arranged media support and publicity. Programmed and conducted small and large group presentations. Evaluated and counseled applicants and conducted interviews. Doubled office output in terms of candidate nominations to Peace Corps.
4/88 - 10/90 Agricultural Extension, Peace Corps/Committee for Development and National Emergency (CEDEN), Maraita, Honduras. Specialized in irrigation and soil conservation. Prepared and implemented program plan to develop farmer-to-farmer extensionists. Designed and supervised the construction and operation of seven small-scale irrigation projects. Conducted workshops and seminars promoting the use of appropriate technology. Motivated and trained community leaders to transfer their technical skills and knowledge. Successfully procured and managed funds from USAID to implement agricultural education projects. Organized and led workshops in extension methodology.
