My interest is in the broad area of wavelength-scale particle characterization and identification. We are currently designing and building a portable digital holography instrument for contact-free imaging of freely-flowing aerosol particles in-situ. By using emerging technologies such as 3D printing and unmanned aerial platforms, we hope to build the first low-cost, ultra-portable digital holography instrument.
Such an instrument can be used to provide novel, statistically significant samples of regional coarse-mode aerosol populations, identifying not only the size distribution, but the morphology as well. This data should complement existing scattering and morphology data, and allow for a convenient way to identify the local aerosol types and abundances.
