Expertise
I am particularly interested in researching how marginalized people are mediating their stigma through social media. My research interests converge at the intersection of new media, ethics, health communication, and medical sociology. I am particularly interested in the study of marginalized online communities and how their presence in digital media enables them to cope with social stigma and advocate for change. I examine these cases in a comparative design using quantitative and qualitative methods. My research interests converge at the intersection of computer-mediated communication and health communication. I am interested in the social roles online communities play for stigmatized individuals and online boundary work—the efforts group members invest in defining who is an authentic member of the group.
