Professor Yan investigates how social media changes the way people communicate and behave. Specifically, she models users’ behavior in online communities to provide design implications to foster social support exchanging and users’ continuous participation.

Areas of Expertise:

  • Social Media in Healthcare, Social Media in Humanitarian Operations, Social Networks and Large-Scale Data Analysis, Business Analytics and Data-driven Decision Making.

Professor Yan’s research interests include social media analytics, patient-centric healthcare models, strategic use of technology, and organizations’ social media strategies. Her recent studies investigate the impact brought by social media on healthcare, especially for patients with chronic diseases.

Professor Yan also works on interdisciplinary research on humanitarian operations.

My primary line of research lies on the intersection of social media and healthcare, exploring various aspects of patients’ social communications in online healthcare communities
