Expertise

My research and teaching combine interests in international relations, comparative politics, and political methodology, along with subfield specialities in political violence (purges, coups, and civil war), authoritarian politics, civil-military relations, leadership and regime transitions, the link between domestic politics and foreign policy, and conflict resolution.

I am currently working on a book project exploring how and when autocratic leaders promote the consolidation of power by purging rival elites from the regime.
