Rotaviruses are a large genetically diverse and rapidly evolving population of icosahedral viruses with genomes consisting of segmented double-stranded RNA. These viruses are major causes of severe diarrheal disease in the young of many animal species, including humans, pets, livestock, and birds. In infants and young children, rotavirus infections account for approximately 200,000 deaths each year, most occurring in developing countries of Africa and Asia.
