Nicholson-Crotty's research focuses on both public and nonprofit management and the role of those sectors in the policy process. She is one of a limited number of scholars who examine the policy role of traditional charitable organizations.

Nicholson-Crotty also has significant expertise in the area of women's and reproductive health.

She has also published numerous papers on the consequences of racial and gender diversity in public organizations.
