Expertise

Dr. Bateman’s primary research interests are in studying and implementing innovative approaches to measure and treat behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia — also described as neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS).

His research seeks to leverage new and existing technologies such as sensors, mobile health applications and social media applications to improve the health of caregivers and people living with dementia. His other research interests involve the study of how NPS manifest in different neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD), Parkinson’s Disease Dementia (PDD), Huntington’s Disease (HD), and Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker disease (GSS).

I work with persons with cognitive impairment, major neurocognitive disorders (dementia, Alzheimer’s disease), older adults with mental illness, and family caregivers.

I have a particular research interest in the treatment of neuropsychiatric symptoms (depression, anxiety, psychosis, irritability) associated with dementia and pre-dementia syndromes.

My research interests are in studying, designing and implementing more effective interventions to treat the neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia, and utilizing technology to help older adults age in place, maintain their independence and improve their quality of life.

My clinical interests include caring for persons with cognitive disorders (mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, etc.) and older adults with mental illness.
