The major emphasis of research in my laboratory is renal physiology/pharmacology. Specific research projects in recent years have examined the renal tubular handling of drugs (cephalosporin antibiotics, H-2 receptor blocking drugs, catecholamines, tyramine, zinc), the renal tubular and hemodynamic effects of dopamine, and the renal tubular transport of lithium.

The latest research project in my laboratory focuses on the effects of shock-wave lithotripsy on renal function, hemodynamics and structure in porcine kidneys. Shock-wave lithotripsy provides an effective, non-invasive means of removing kidney stones from the renal calyx, but the shock waves can also destroy renal tissue in the process. The renal damage thus produced may impair mechanisms that regulate blood pressure and may lead to the development of chronic renal failure. Studies in my laboratory to date have characterized the effect of clinical levels of shock wave therapy on renal hemodynamics and structure in intact and nephrectomized pigs, both before and after treatment with a calcium-channel blocking drug. Studies now underway examine the contribution of various clinical risk factors (e.g., renal infection, kidney size, hypertension, etc.) on the renal hemodynamic and tubular response to the shock waves. A major aim of the research is to develop techniques for the study of the intrarenal distribution of blood flow in association with the tissue damage caused by the shock waves.
