Dr. Shanks’ clinical research interests focus on optimizing medical care for complicated pregnancies. A recent study evaluated the need for antibiotics after cesarean delivery in those with chorioamnionitis. Other projects investigated the importance of ultrasound findings associated with aneuploidy.
As an educator, his interests are in training our next generation of students and physicians. Projects have included OB simulation for teaching as well as identifying the best method of disseminating material in larger teaching settings.
Dr. Shanks’ practice philosophy is to use the best available evidence to make the best medical decisions for his patients. His clinical interests and areas of expertise include:
- Medical complications of pregnancy
- Preterm birth
- Multiple gestations
- Fetal ultrasound imaging
- Amniocentesis and percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS)
