PDE, Applied Mathematics, and Computation
Teaching Interests:
Teaching mathematical modeling, especially for students in the social and life sciences, and for math students planning to work in industry. Have developed courses and course materials to teach mathematical ideas via teams working onreal-world problems. Directed NSF institutes on modeling for teachers and REU programs in Mathematics for over twenty years. Currently directing a large curriculum project called Mathematics Throughout the Curriculum.
Research Interests:
Mathematicalmodeling with special emphasis on digital signal processing and mathematical aspects of simulation. The digital signal processing is presently related to the study of algorithms for speech recognition by computer, and the simulation work is related to the study of queues and to algorithms for linear programming. I have participated in over sixty interdisciplinary doctoral studies at Indiana University and have received numerous grants from NSF and NIH.
Industrial Experience:
IBM, Defense related work, Owego, New York
Mazur Corporation, Software development, Cincinnati, Ohio
Interstate Electronics, Speech recognition, Anaheim, California
CDT,Inc, Vice-President, Computer-based speech training aids, Bloomington, Indiana
