His research interests include organizational crime and the social mechanisms used to control it, the jurisprudence of sentencing, and criminal justice planning and evaluation. His most recent research is an examination of a spectrum of organized criminal activity, from the social organization of futures trading to the organization and enterprise of illegal drug distribution.

Professor Schlegel teaches courses on theories of crime and deviance, white-collar crime, and criminal justice management.
