Through my research, I investigate the role vowel sounds play in spoken communication.

My dissertation research focuses on the emergence of vowel quality alternations (e.g. blood ~ bleed, mouse ~ mice) in Dinka-Nuer and early Germanic speech communities.

Recent research includes using vocalic portions of the signal to estimate talkers' vocal tract length, differentiate minor place contrasts within coronal consonants, and predict upcoming sounds in the speech stream. Current work focuses on usage-based modelling of the emergence of morphologically-conditioned vowel quality alternations in Dinka-Nuer and early Germanic speech communities.
