Dr. Staten's research focuses on the causes and mechanisms of large scale atmospheric circulation change in the lowest 20 kilometers of the atmosphere. Why does the midlatitude jet shift? Have humans caused the tropical Hadley circulation to widen? What do cloud patterns teach us about circulation change, and how do clouds influence circulation change? How will extreme events like atmospheric rivers or blocking change with global climate?

My lab focuses on large scale climate variability and change. Some questions that interest me are: Why does the midlatitude jet shift? Have humans caused the subtropical dry belts to expand? What do cloud patterns teach us about circulation change, and how do clouds influence circulation change?

I am interested in understanding how the Earth's atmosphere works. Being a little more specific, my research focuses on changes in the global circulation in the lowest 20 kilometers of the atmosphere, and accompanying changes in cloudiness.
