Current projects include methanogenesis by high-pressure carbonate reduction, structural stability of potential "light" alloying elements in Earth's core, stability and thermodynamic parameters of hydrous silicates (with relevance to subduction zones) and band gap measurements of semiconductors under compression.

His research interests include whole-earth carbon cycling and deep planetary structure and composition while his teaching interests include geology of the national parks and meteorology.
