I specialize in Mesoamerican archaeology, settlement pattern survey, human-environment interactions, and the applications of geospatial and 3D technologies in archaeology.
I'm interested in research topics such as: Human Environment Interaction, Ancient Settlement and Land-use change, Urbanization and Urbanism, archaeological survey methods, Public archaeology, Community-based research, and many more.
Other research interests include aerial archaeology and Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry of landscapes, architecture, artifacts. I have been testing the utility of a UAV (drone) for remote site discovery in archaeological survey, making digital elevation models of cleared landscapes and 3D models of architecture.
Badillo investigates people who lived in proximity to trade roads during times of conquest in the Nejapa region of Oaxaca, Mexico. His research spans the Late Postclassic period and the Colonial period and focuses on settlement patterns throughout the region.
Research interests: Archaeology and social context, colonization, anthropology of violence, landscape, settlement patterns, trade and commerce, archaeological survey methods, GIS, dialect geography, archival research.
