Narrative plays an important role in my work as an artist/educator. As an artist, I am interested in life narratives. I believe the path a life takes is formed by the interaction between decision-making and chance. As an educator, I recognize that instructors in the arts are like tribal storytellers, passing aesthetics and methods from artist to novice across time. I strive to help my students map out their own paths by challenging them to achieve excellence, to open their minds to the unfamiliar, to try something that looks hard, and to value the road as much as the destination.
In recent years, Sherry Stone’s studio work has centered on portraiture that captures decisive moments or periods in a person’s life. That subject matter has broadened to include images that are suggestive of the passage of time, focusing more on the idea of the path rather than a particular moment. She has worked primarily in painting and drawing in recent years, but has also made prints and built installations.
