I will be looking at the suitability of algae cultured on poultry litter anaerobic digestate for biofuel and feed production. The main objectives of this project will be to 1) characterize the crude biochemical composition of two algae species, A. protothecoides and C. sorokiniana, cultured for fuel and feed applications; 2) quantify the reduction in viable bacterial pathogens throughout the coupled anaerobic digestion-algal process, including pathogen levels in the final algal biomass; and 3) test the effect of the process variables on bacterial pathogen reductions, specifically E. coli and Salmonella.
