Current educational and research interests focus on the development and dissemination of the Outcome-Present-State-Test (OPT) model of clinical reasoning and ongoing development of the Carolina Self-Regulation Inventory (CRSI). The role of future studies in nursing education, practice, research, and policy development is also a professional interest.

Dr. Daniel Pesut has over 36 years of experience in nursing practice, education, administration and research. Early in his career he served in the US Army Nurse Corps, and worked as a staff nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research and the Brooke Army Medical Center Burn unit in San Antonio Texas. Observing burn patient reactions to stressful treatment procedures, he became interested in the concept and topic of volitional psychosomatic self-regulation. He has conducted research and developed research instruments to measure self-regulation strategies people use to help themselves recover from illness. He also has educational and research interests in the topics of creative thinking, metacognition,clinical reasoning, leadership development, integral studies, and the role futures-thinking plays in transformational leadership. Dr. Pesut is the recipient of numerous awards. In 1993, He received the Edith Moore Copeland Award for Excellence in Creativity. The Copeland Award is one of six Founder's awards bestowed by The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International and is one of the highest honors bestowed by the Society. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (1995). In 1996 he was named Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Texas School of Nursing at the Health Science Center in San Antonio,Texas. In 1997 he was named Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher of the year at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing. He received the Excellence in Mentoring Award from the Alpha Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau in 1999 and an Excellence in Leadership Award from the Alpha Chapter of the Honor Society of Nursing in 2006. In 2002 he was recognized by the American Assembly for Men in Nursing with the Luther Christman Award. Northern Illinois University's Alumni Association recognized him in 2003 with the College of Health and Human Sciences Outstanding Alumni Award. He served on the Board of Directors of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (1999-2002). He served as President of The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International during the 2003-2005 biennium. He served as a Trustee of the Plexus Institute (2005-2012) and Chaired the Plexus Trustee Board 2010-2011. He has served on the board of the the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare (2009-2010). In 2008 he earned a certificate in integral studies and a certificate of completion for core mediation skills training. He is a Certified Hudson Insitute Coach (2011). Gallup leadership strengths include the following themes: strategic, learner, connectedness, achiever, activator. Assessed character strengths are: creativity, ingenuity,originality,fairness,equity,justice, judgment and critical thinking as well as open-mindedness, perspective (wisdom), self-control and self-regulation.

From 1997 to 2002 Dr. Pesut authored a bi-monthly feature in Nursing Outlook entitled Future Think. He has served on the editorial board of Nurse Educator (1982-2002) and served as author and Assistant Editor for the Education Column of the Journal of Professional Nursing (2000-2002). He served on the editorial board of Nursing Outlook ( 2003-2011). Through out his career Dr. Pesut has been invested in developing the critical, creative, and clinical thinking skills of nurses. His contribution to this mission is authorship of several book chapters on clinical reasoning in nursing and the book entitled: Clinical Reasoning: The Art and Science of Critical and Creative Thinking (1999) - co authored with Dr. JoAnne Herman and published by Delmar. He has published a number of articles and editorials on futures thinking and health professions leadership development. He is a master teacher, certified coach,speaker, and consultant. Future research interests include -ongoing educational evaluation research of the Outcome Present-State Test (OPT) model of reflective clinical reasoning,development and evaluation of interdisciplinary health professions educational initiatives and application and evaluation of mediation and conflict resolution models and methods in health care contexts. Pesut is authorized to use the Harthill Leadership Development Framework/Profile in consulting and coaching contexts www.harthill.co.uk And is a certified user of the Hogan Assessment.
