Dr. James Farmer is a sustainable behavior and decision-making researcher with interest in community food systems and natural resources sustainability. He focuses on individuals’ choice-making that lead to sustainable resource usage, such as landowner decisions to place conservation easements on private lands and farmers’ adoption of organic management practices.
His research focuses on sustainable food systems and land conservation. Recent projects include a study of the utility of high tunnels for Indiana specialty crop producers; farmer diversification in the tri-state area of Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio; and urban ecology and the role of municipal parks preparing for climate change.
Sustainable Food Systems Science (SFSS) at Indiana University studies the social dimensions of food sustainability including culture, equity, and justice in food provisioning from local to global. In Indiana, and in research sites around the world, we examine the production, coordination, and consumption of food value chains and the supporting networks and decision-making from individual to organizational levels.
