Dr. Cindy Bixler Borgmann retired in spring 2020 after more than four decades of teaching. Borgmann was appointed to the fine arts faculty in 1979 and taught courses in art education pedagogy and critical inquiry skills. Her research interests were rooted in the art classroom using semiotic theory to examine how contemporary art practice influences cognition in young people. Most recently, working with teachers and their students, she explored the critical impact of art on youth through integrated curriculum design. Borgmann has been constant throughout the history of our art education program and trained generations of students to teach visual arts in every kind of school – in the urban, rural, suburban, private, and public spheres.
