Expertise

Shockey's current work draws on a broad range of sources inside and outside of academic philosophy to think about how we can best live in the face of increasing global ecological instability. Prior to this, his work focused on conceptions of selfhood and subjectivity in the modern Western philosophical tradition, particularly in the work of Rene Descartes, Nicolas Malebranche, John Locke, Immanuel Kant, and Martin Heidegger.

His current focus is on teaching and developing courses on philosophical aspects of sustainability, such as environmental justice and systems thinking.
